Dillon, S.C., October 24, 2012: ASA-sanctioned, Dillon Motor Speedway hosted the final race of the season on Saturday and Sunday, October 20-21.
There was a record Four Cylinder field on hand for the weekend’s events. The $1,000 to win race attracted an astounding 24 Four Cylinder drivers from around the country. Local racer, Michael Tucker took the checkered flag after holding off Brian Bryant who finished second, Will Smith who was third, 2012 Track Champion Kevin Jackson finished fourth and Tom Hutson who rounded out the top-five. Sixth place finisher AJ Sanders won the $100 Hard Charger Award.
Archie Adams Jr., the 2012 Track Champion was able to take advantage of a missed shift by Justin Hicks late in the race to capture the Late Model victory. Hicks rebounded to finish second. Marty Griggs finished third while Mack Little finished fourth during his first visit to the speedway all year. Mark Wertz was also making his first visit of the year. After scrapping the wall, he was able to bring the car home in the fifth position.
The Super Truck feature started off on a wild note. Every single truck that started on the outside row was involved in a lap one, turn one pile-up. Jimmy Herrington took the lead on lap 21, and he never looked back as he captured the trophy and $2,000 purse. Archie Adams Jr. was the runner-up finisher. After the conclusion of the race, third place finisher Hal Goodson was announced the 2012 Track Champion for the division. His son Hayes Goodson finished fourth, and Brad Cox from Australia finished fifth.
Darlington native Bobby June won the Charger feature this past weekend. He was able to hold off hard charger Jason Calhoun. Mike Watts became the 2012 Track Champion with a solid third place run. Michael Williamson finished fourth, and William Haynie who started dead last rallied for a fifth place run after avoiding a last lap crash.
Tommy Poole captured the victory and the 2012 championship this past Sunday. Friendly rival Ricky Locklair Sr. finished second. Brian Love rounded out the top-three as he made his first visit to the speedway this season. Art Chambers had a very strong fourth place finish, and Justin Altman rounded out the top-five.
Steve Chauncey made a daring pass down the backstretch in the closing laps of the Mini Cup feature to capture the victory. Chris Conner who was right on Chauncey’s back bumper finished second. Darlington’s Sheriff Wayne Byrd had an outstanding third place finish. Byrd rallied back from a lap 14 pile-up out of turn two. Trey Davis finished fourth, and Scott Brooks finished fifth. Benny Lester won the Mini Cup Dash event.
Andy Norton was declared the winner of the UCAR feature after Alex Fleming was disqualified. Will Smith was the runner-up, while Mark Dean, pole sitter Kayla Dean and J Altman rounded out the top-five.
The next race will be held on the week of New Year’s Day. The speedway will host the 3rd Annual ASA Street Stock New Year’s Day 300. The massive Street Stock event will pay a $2,000 purse.
